In 2020, we hosted a week of Diversity, Equity, and Action programming engaging 5500+ CareFirst associates virtually. Events included workshops on inclusion and the social determinants of health, skill-based volunteering, and featured crucial conversations with executive leaders on their personal connections to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). THE POSITION The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a senior-level management position reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). This position will establish the vision and strategy that champions the importance and value of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. The Director will evaluate the internal and external DEI landscape and design innovative solutions focused on recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce. The Director will aslo support the creation of equity value propositions across the organization including delivering high impact strategies across functional and business areas. The Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion will provide direct leadership in the following areas and have these key responsibilities:

  • Utilize thought leadership and tailored insights to develop, design, and implement the overall Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy for CareFirst, as well as lead the successful tactical implementation of that strategy.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to Executive and Business Leadership on an overall DEI strategy, metrics, and emerging workplace trends to gain commitment and promote strategy throughout the organization.
  • Deploy methods to measure and capture diversity metrics. Measure, monitor, and report out progress on representation, engagement, and initiatives. Leverage data and metrics to uncover opportunities for growth, promote inclusion methods, and deliver recommendations/insights to company leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure that Associate Resource Groups' (ARG) missions and visions align and support overall DEI strategy. Guide and mentor ARG leads and establish a governance structure to help ensure positive execution of scheduled programs and achievement of both internal and external community group objectives.
  • Enhance DEI awareness, commitment, and accountability through identifying and/or leading training efforts for people leaders and associates.
  • Work collaboratively with the Marketing team to build the company's brand as a diverse, equitable and inclusive employer. Ensure messaging is rooted in the company's brand, all communications, community philosophy outreach and initiatives. Responds to a wide variety of inquiries from internal and external sources for the purpose of promoting our culture, programs and initiatives as well as responding to and identifying relevant issues and recommending or implementing action plans to address.
  • Partner with Procurement to ensure we are promoting an inclusive and equitable approach to vendor selection and spend.
  • Partner with Health Services Division to leverage Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion council to identify proactive policy change recommendations, both internal and external, as well to build an infrastructure that promotes health equity in our communities and with our members.
  • Partner with leaders across the company to incorporate practices and processes that embed DEI into all aspects of the employee life cycle (recruitment, selection, performance management, development, mobility, retention, and engagement).
  • Directly manage a team of 2 professionals while providing guidance to 8 Associate Resource Groups. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The successful candidate will possess an energy and passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion; a solid business acumen, and capable of assimilating vast amounts of data to analyze trends and impediments to CareFirst's DEI strategy. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders along with the flexibility to pivot between strategic and tactical thinking; prioritizing initiatives and resources as needed. Other key qualifiers include:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Business, HR, Public Administration, Organizational Development, Leadership, Diversity, or other related programs.
    • 7-10 years' experience of successfully designing, implementing, and driving diversity, equity, and inclusion programs/strategies with at least 3 years of management experience.
    • Excellent executive presence, with ability to influence at the most senior levels of the organization.
    • Experience with project management, strategic operations, strategy consulting, and designing data-driven diversity program strategies. Experience analyzing and interpreting data and translating analysis into recommendations.
    • Strong understanding of industry benchmarks, leading practices, and innovations in DEI.
    • Thorough understanding of workplace diversity, affirmative action, and EEO laws and regulations.
    • Results focused with a solution orientated mindset. Demonstrated effectiveness in weaving DEI into processes, policies, and everyday workings of the organization.
    • Cross-cultural skills and awareness related to individuals from broad backgrounds such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, individuals with disabilities, among others.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication, including strong presentation skills; adept at breaking down complex data into understandable components, as well as motivate, inspire, and influence stakeholders.
