Electronics Manufacturing Engineer

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), focused on creating defining innovations that ensure our nation's preeminence in the 21st century, is actively seeking an Electronics Manufacturing Engineer for the Advanced Electrical Fabrication Group. This position will further the development and fabrication of hardware used to solve hard problems whose solutions have an important bearing on national security, military readiness, space exploration, national health, and the advancement of fundamental science or engineering. The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary:

Sought out by engineering partners across the Lab's mission areas, this Engineer will directly plan, lead and execute the realization of ideas and designs and contribute to the success of the Lab's missions. Through the application of innovative thinking and solid engineering fundamentals, this position will drive the development and implementation of processes that optimize the speed and reliability of surface mount technology (SMT) and mixed technology assemblies in a high mix, low volume facility producing state-of-the-art systems for space and military missions.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

1. Serve as the manufacturing expert as part of a team(s) designing and fabricating complex electronic assemblies. Responsible for the manufacturing outcomes for the hardware in that subsystem. Perform analyses as required to ensure that the hardware will meet the sponsor's requirements. Recommend new materials and processes to improve performance, quality, cost and schedule. Evaluate and work with vendors as necessary. (40%)

2. Own the development, implementation, and improvement of processes used for the fabrication of complex, high reliability electronic assemblies. Understand and respect crucial aspects of assigned work and adapt personal response, processes and actions to match. (20%)

3. Guide and develop fabrication technicians in the electronic assembly areas. (20%)

4. Program and/or develop process parameters for automated electronic assembly tools and equipment. Maintain or assist/ direct with the maintenance, calibration, and repairs of these tools and equipment. (10%)

5. Generate, review and revise standard operating procedures and work instructions (10%)

Required Qualifications:
* Passion to learn and improve self and processes.

* BS degree or equivalent in a technical field (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, etc.,)
*3 to 8 years of increasingly responsible work in an electronics manufacturing environment, particularly in a high mix, low volume facility.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*Ability to work in a collaborative environment with partners.
*Proven process development and improvement skills with knowledge of solder joint characteristics and SMT processing tools and materials.
*Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
*Proficiency with PC's and MS Office applications.

Desired Qualifications:
*Experience building electronic hardware for spacecraft.
*Experience with IPC J-STD-001ES.
*Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE).
*Exposure to manufacturing resource planning (MRP) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems.

Special Working Conditions: A majority of the work will be performed in a clean room environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to travel (in-country), up to 5% during certain periods, for evaluation of vendors, in-process inspections, design reviews, and process evaluations. Flexibility in work hours is occasionally required for months at a time. Shifted work hours will be required (partial second shift and/or weekends) during these times.
