What you'll be doing... You will be responsible for developing and implementing Verizon's public policy strategy and external affairs and community engagement programs in the counties, municipalities and state of Maryland in support of company goals and positions across all business units enterprise-wide with a focus on issues including technology deployment. - Monitors, analyzes, and tracks legislation and works with subject matter experts within the company to determine impact, policy position and strategy to achieve desired outcome. - Responsible for representing Verizon and working with third parties and community leaders to influence policy makers at the county, municipal and state government level. - Supports all Verizon business units on policy and business matters before the state, county, and municipality. - Responsible for identifying, analyzing, and influencing proposed state and local legislative activities working with employee, 3rd party and grass root advocates. - Plans and executes strategies to ensure that any state or local legislation has a positive or neutral impact on the company. - Interacts with leaders of the state and local jurisdiction's executive branch and with members of state, county, and municipal legislative bodies at community affairs, political fundraisers and business events. - Keeps management informed of pending legislation and community engagement and recommends or advises on how to best position the company. - Serves as primary strategic liaison to company affiliations, special business, third party groups, grassroots local influencers, and community and thought leaders. - Provides team direction on communicating messages and strategic initiatives to key stakeholders. - Represents Verizon in a variety of forums including providing testimony at legislative hearings, roundtables, community meetings and executive proceedings where policy proposals will have an impact on Verizon. - Compiles competitive intelligence. - Ensures proper and timely filing of all state, county and state lobbyist and grass root filings for the team. - Provides support and oversight for Verizon Good Government Club (Political Action Committee) in the state. - Management of the administrative of affairs of state and local government affairs office. - Facilitate the resolution of government, business and residential customer service inquires and concerns working with the business office and other business units. What we're looking for... You'll need to have: - Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience. - Six or more years of relevant work experience. - Five or more years of experience in state, county, and municipal government relations in Maryland monitoring, analyzing, and/or tracking legislation and lobbying. - Experience in advocacy/issues management, community organizing, and coalition-building. - Knowledge of executive rulemaking and legislative processes at the municipal, county and state level in Maryland. - Experience in the development, management and advocacy of business policies and positions such as technology, tax, privacy, regulatory, labor and telecommunications. - Knowledge of campaign and ethic laws and experience in meeting lobbyist and grassroots filing requirements. - Knowledge concerning economic regulation in the communications, cable, or utilities industries. - Willingness to travel up to approximately 50% of the time within assigned territory. - Valid driver's license. - Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed. Even better if you have: - Law degree or Master of Public Administration. - Bachelor's degree in business, political science, government or related area. - Knowledge of government and its external and internal influencers and networks in Maryland. - Established legislative, executive, and business relationships throughout the state. - Proven history of success in achieving policy and business desired outcomes leveraging internal and external resources. - Strong relationships and network of contacts at the state, county and municipal level of government in Maryland. - Highest level of personal integrity. - Public policy, community engagement, advocacy experience on behalf of a technology, communications, cable TV or public utilities business/industry. - Broad knowledge of Verizon operations and business functions or extensive positioning already established in territory. - Demonstrated communications skills, both verbal and written and competency in preparing legislative reports and strategic plans for internal review and presentation. - Political action committee management. - Demonstrated skills in negotiating issues in support of corporate goals and objectives. - Willingness to work a flexible work schedule to include evenings and weekends should the circumstances require availability. - Strong leadership skills. - Demonstrated communications skills, both verbal and written and competency in preparing legislative reports and strategic plans for internal review and presentation. - Capability to be a quick learner, outcome oriented and have demonstrated ability to work independently and within a group. - Strong organizational and planning skills.
