Director of Library and Learning CommonsBaltimore City Community College is searching for a Director of the Library and Learning Commons. The director will serve the staff, faculty, and students at Baltimore City Community College by providing leadership in the implementation and ongoing activities associated with the Library and Learning Commons. This position is responsible for the administration and management -in support of the needs of credit and continuing education students. Leads in the exploration and adoption of innovations in library and tutoring services and in new methods of resource and service delivery. Leads efforts to inspire and encourage participation by departments and recruit faculty to develop, adopt, and/or assess open educational resources. Establishes appropriate liaison relationships with internal and external partners. The director will also be a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, will collaborate extensively with other academic department chairs, and will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.Responsibilities/DutiesPrimary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for the Learning Commons development and implementation, including engaging and collaborating with appropriate academic departments, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide leadership for the assessment of the Learning Commons, including the data collection, monitoring and evaluating progress, and recommending and implementing institutional practices to improve effectiveness on an on-going basis.
  • Generate reports to meet institutional needs and grant requirements; prepare and manage annual budget for the Learning Commons as per the grant; maintain accurate records regarding expenditure and equipment inventories; review operations on a periodic basis to optimize cost effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership to staff, faculty, and students to promote the services provided by the Learning Commons, help institutionalize new practices and enhance student success, as well as assure the operational success of the Learning Commons.
  • Interact with students in the Learning Commons in ways that promote and enhance a growth mindset regarding student learning and model such behavior consistently for faculty and staff.
  • Provide administrative support for users of the services, equipment, materials, and software available through the Learning Commons.
  • Ensures that reference services are available and circulation activities and other library functions are effectively performed during the hours of library operation
  • Responsible for ensuring the optimal functioning of the integrated automation system; ensures appropriate preservation of essential data and records
  • Supervises the timely and accurate processing, cataloguing and circulation of library resources
  • Prepares and recommends budget based on current needs and the requirements of effective operation; ensures operations are conducted within budget parameters
  • Selects resources for purchase and addition to the library collection, working within the collection development guidelines approved by the instructional deans; advises college staff of resources available
  • Plans and prepares for future growth and innovation; prepares and submits proposals for enhancement of services based on objective need analysis and use projections
  • Supervises library staff, coordinates activities and absences, and arranges for appropriate training and technical support; provides communication to staff regarding actions and decisions of board of trustees and administration
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to applicable federal, state and college laws, requirements, policies, and procedures within their area of authority
  • Works with college staff to determine learning resource needs; participates or makes assignment to appropriate college committees
  • Responsible for compilation, preservation, cataloguing, and appropriate accessibility of college archives
  • Ensures that required reports for federal and state agencies and for internal needs are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in library science and operations, requests appropriate personal professional development
  • Maintains communications and membership as appropriate with professional associations
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.Required Qualifications
    • Master's degree in library science from an ALA certified program
    • Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library, or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position
    • Experience with an automated library system
    • Experience in post-secondary instruction is desirable
    • Ability to effectively supervise and direct both skilled professionals and semi-skilled assistants
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with college students, clients, faculty, staff, and administration
