Financial Manager
Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the
commercialization of university technology through technology
licensing, the development of corporate research collaborations,
and venture creation.
Reporting to JHTV's Associate Director of Finance and
Administration, the Financial Manager leads the operations of the
JHTV Finance team and provides direct oversight and hands-on
administration of JHTV's global financial operations, to include
technology transfer licensing activity, the operating budget, and
JHTV's strategic programs. The position ensures JHTV adheres to JHU
financial controls, policies, and procedures and also works closely
with JHTV's senior leadership and management teams to provide
resolution assistance on complex issues. The position will serve as
a liaison to the JHU Controller's Office, Budget Office, and other
University Administration and Schools to advocate for JHTV and to
disseminate information to these organizations regarding
operational and strategic issues and opportunities.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Financial
- Works alongside the Associate Director to develop, coordinate,
and manage the annual and five-year operating and capital plan
process in concert with the University. Administration, JHTV
leadership, and JHTV divisional management, recommending ways to
reduce cost and enhance revenues.
- Works alongside the Associate Director to manage the quarterly
University Administration financial reporting process to include
actual to budget variance analysis and forecasting.
- Works alongside the Associate Director to liaise with the
University Administration, schools, and university-wide financial
leadership in discussions surrounding financial results and budget
planning, to include socialization of JHTV's annual school funding
allocations.
- In absence of the Sr. and Associate Directors, represents JHTV
Finance in financial matters.
- Monitors JHTV divisional budgets and actual expenditure
activity for cost efficiency and strategic growth opportunities.
Ensures that expenditures are aligned with JHTV's strategic
mission.
- Directly participates in and oversees Finance staff in
preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc financial and
metrics-based statements drawing from JHTV internal institutional
data and JHU SAP financial data to support the Associate Director,
JHTV leadership and divisions, JHU schools, and external
stakeholders. Reporting scope includes Technology Transfer,
Corporate Partnerships, and FastForward program activity.
- Oversees a small portfolio of sponsored research and restricted
gift activity including proposal submissions, post-award
management, and coordination of reporting on sponsored and
non-sponsored projects with program leads. Involves proactive
communication with JHURA, Development and Alumni Relations (DAR),
and JHTV divisional leads to ensure proper accounting for gifts,
sponsorships, and grants to JHTV.
- Oversees Finance staff and coordinates with JHTV divisions in a
high volume of accounting and procurement functions to include
billing, interdivisional revenue and expense transfers, cash
uploads, external vendor payments to law firms and royalty payment
recipients, check deposits, unidentified cash reconciliation, and
other cash-based functions in direct support of JHTV's license
revenue distribution activity. Provides oversight and direction to
HR, Admin, and Finance staff regarding e-forms, check requests,
expense reimbursements, independent contractor activity, purchase
order activity, and other ad-hoc functions. Ensures that
transactions are compliant, allocable, and timely. Serves as
first-level approver of SAP transaction activity.
- Assists JHTV Finance staff with complex license revenue
transactional activity and provides insight on contract and
transactional compliance issues.
- Reviews monthly accounting activity; works with JHTV Finance
staff to correct errors, and informs the Associate Director of any
issues.
- Provides oversight of the FastForward leasing program
transactional portfolio. Meets regularly with Finance staff and
director of FastForward's facilities to reconcile lease payment
activity. Requires use of JHU's VPOS system and proficiency in
SAP.
- Assists Associate Director with tracking and reporting JHTV's
salary and fringe expense activity, headcount, turnover, and other
key HR data.
Systems and Software
- Works regularly with Inteum, JHTV's IP Tracking and License
Revenue Distribution system. With the assistance of JHTV Finance
staff, ensures that SAP financial activity (revenue and expense) is
reconciled to this internal system on a monthly basis. This role
requires in-depth experience in SAP Analytics and ECC, as well as
proficiency with using databases and systems.
- Using complex Excel formulas and functions, prepares formatted
reports and presentations. Leverages Excel pivot tables in daily
reporting requests.
- Assists JHTV SAP end users with SAP issues.
Supervisory
- In coordination with Associate Director, manages JHTV Finance
staff and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination,
and evaluation of the Financial Operations team. Identifies
opportunities for process efficiencies and business continuity
measures.
- In coordination with Associate Director, supervises, trains,
and leads the JHTV Finance team to ensure all accounting and
month-end reporting is completed. Motivates team and provides
strong leadership; participates in new hires, onboards new staff,
and provides day-to-day direction. As needed, conducts performance
management and addresses employee relations matters in a timely
fashion.
- Sets clear performance expectations, provides feedback,
recommends training and coaching when appropriate, ensures
recognition for results and takes corrective action to resolve
performance problems as appropriate.
- Promotes and models a culture of exceptional customer
service.
- Works in concert with HR staff to ensure staff sponsored
e-forms are timely and that sponsored salary expenditure is in
alignment with grant budgets.
- Serves as a key member of the JHTV's management team, providing
leadership and direction on a variety of topics, including by not
limited to Concur, JHU travel reimbursement policies, procurement
and check requests, Payment Works, ServiceNow, and Independent
Contractor activity.

- Excellent written and oral communication and presentation

manage multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced
work environment.
- Broad knowledge of financial planning and budgeting, with
strong presentation skills, as well as demonstrated experience
managing financial and capital planning.
- Proactive communication style and comfort with reaching out to
a broad range of contacts, including but not limited to JHU Central
Leadership, School and Department Leadership, JHU Research
Administration, Development and Alumni Relations, Office of
Research Administration, external companies and individual
stakeholders.
- Ability to manage budgetary matters at both high oversight and
detailed analysis level.
- Understanding of general accounting principles and
practices.
- Ability to analyze data to perform financial trend and
projection analysis.
- Comprehensive knowledge of SAP reporting and all end user
functions.
- Able to identify short and long-term problems, strengths and
weaknesses of current practices, alternatives, and implementing
creative solutions to address complicated issues.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
(expert experience in Excel).
- Ability to work independently and make sound judgment.
- Knowledge of JHU policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of federal regulations related to sponsored funding
for educational institutions (Circular A-21, A- 133, and FAR).
- Working knowledge of electronic proposal submission systems,
i.e., COEUS, FIBI, NIH commons, FastLane, and Grants.gov
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related
field.
- Five years related financial/accounting and financial
management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring,
organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department,
center, or unit.
- Additional education (Master's in a related field) may
substitute for required experience and additional related
experience may substitute for required education, to the extent
permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to
Federal Export Controls.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience at JHU or elsewhere
preferred.
