Summary
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will have the opportunity to
provide tactical, strategic, and technical leadership for a
software engineering group that supports a critical business
domain. In this role, you will support the development of software
systems through stable teams including Architects, Developers,
Business Analysts, and Quality Engineers. You will do this by
coordinating and managing the daily activities of group members in
assigned work areas and resolving day-to-day issues, workflow, and
business issues. You are also expected to apply industry
experience, processes, and tools to improve team operations and to
build and maintain a supportive, cooperative, and cohesive work
environment. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will regularly
coordinate with other functional teams, as well as disciplines like
Product Strategy, Product Management and Program Management. You
will also represent the team's work with important internal
stakeholder groups, working with them to understand their needs and
resolve their issues through the following core
responsibilities.
The Product:
This position will own and support the Athena Browser Edition (ABE)
suite of applications within the Test Authoring, Publishing &
Delivery department. ABE is Pearson VUE's next generation strategic
test driver responsible for exam presentation to candidates,
recording of candidate responses, calculation of exam scores and
reporting of exam results. We are in the midst of building out the
ABE suite of applications, which leverage state of the art
technologies and processes. With strong organizational support and
momentum, we are looking for an outstanding candidate to bolster
the technical staff for this mission critical suite of
applications.
Product Delivery
Represent team capacity and work with the business to schedule
prioritized projects
Understand the product and solution space and ensure Pearson VUE
maintains best-in-class
Suggest and lead process and technology improvements within the
technology team
Ensure diversity within the engineering roadmap between internal
engineering needs (e.g., technical debt, security), client needs
and roadmap items
Manage resource requirements and formulate strategies to meet
stakeholder needs
Engage with other teams to ensure successful coordination of
project dependencies
Collaborate with Project Managers to drive work to successful
completion
Manage Critical Incident response efforts with client needs first
and foremost
Ensure each product release meet Pearson VUE quality thresholds
People Management:
Provide one on one coaching and direction for team members
Set goals and provide feedback for team member's performance
reviews
Provide responsible management of compensation plans for staff
Recruit and retain high performing staff with skills that meet the
team's needs
Manage partnerships with consulting firms to supplement engineering
teams as necessary
Promote a culture of continuous improvement within your team and
the larger organization
Technology Leadership:
Understand and manage the various technologies leveraged in
application suites
Collaborate with architects and directors on strategic direction
and drive that direction to completion
Represent technical issues to product stakeholders and clients
Identify areas for technical improvement and create plans to
address
Provide leadership around agile development processes and emerging
trends in engineering best practices
Minimize technical debt by balancing maintenance and feature work
as necessary
Current Toolset: Java, JavaScript, Angular, Spring/Spring Boot,
Docker, RabbitMQ, MariaDB
Communications:
Collaborate with product stakeholders regarding roadmap and
releases
Promote organizational goals and values to your team
Represent Pearson VUE in current and potential client
engagements
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business or other
application field or equivalent experience
7+ years in software development and demonstrated ability to lead
and manage teams towards high performance
4+ years in technical leadership with relevant experience on Java
based applications
At least 2-3 years in a direct management role or other related
background consistent with success in this role.

Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors
including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and
specific office location. As required by the Colorado and New York
City laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
Minimum full-time salary range is between $135,000 - $155,000.
