Cardiac Surgery Step Down: The Cardiac Surgery Step-Down Unit is a
26-bed unit that provides care to adult patients requiring pre- and
post-operative care for heart surgery. There are 22 private and 4
semi-private beds, all with telemetry monitoring. This feature
allows the heart team to monitor you 24 hours a day while nurses
work with complex care patients.
Members of the Cardiac Surgery Step-Down nursing team care for post
open-heart surgery patients who are one or more days removed from
surgery. Patients on the unit will have undergone invasive
open-chest procedures including: heart and lung transplants,
Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD), and more. The patient care
involves working with the inter-disciplinary team to progress
patients through the care plan by providing top of its class
nursing, respiratory, and physical therapy care to patients so they
can ambulate and recover from their surgery.
This role is reserved for the new graduate or nurse with less than
12 months experience. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the
institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in
this role successfully pass the probationary period within 12
months (18 months maximum with a defined action plan developed with
manager). Utilizes the nursing process as the frame of reference
for practice as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to
develop own practice, and to support group practice goals at the
unit level. Functions effectively as a member of a
multidisciplinary health care team. Is accountable to patient,
family and team members for care provided, and to the nurse manager
for totality of work performance.
What You Need to Be Successful:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, with a
Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or
eligible to practice due to compact state requirements outlined by
the Maryland Board of Nursing
