Assists in the performance of surgical pathology services. Examine,
gross and dictate findings for surgical specimens including uteri,
other gyn, thyroid, skin, bone specimens. Prepare specimens for
microscopic study. Part-time Saturday/Sunday, 4-6 hours/week and
occasional PRN vacation coverage during the week, flexible
Essential Key Responsibilities:
Performs effective laboratory operations by adhering to standards
of specimen preparation, grossing, dictating and sampling for each
specimen, and maintaining at all times laboratory safety.
Documents specimens by verifying patient and specimen
Assists Pathologists by performing independently the preparation,
grossing, dictation and dissection of surgical specimens, with
assistance as needed:
Examines and prepares surgical pathology specimens.
Selects and identifies tissue for microscopic study.
Triages specimens received from surgery, dictates gross findings on
selected specimen using appropriate terminology, and refers tissue
sections for microscopic review by Pathologist.
Maintains records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and
dictation and assists in the compilation of reports for surgical
Labels and stores gross tissue specimen.
Photographs specimen samples as appropriate for use in instruction
Maintains strictest confidentiality.
Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well
as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural
Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelors Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent
under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
guidelines of high complexity testing.
State licensure, if applicable.
Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical
Completion of a Pathologists Assistant program accredited by the
American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Successful completion of an Online Medical Terminology Program upon
commencement of employment.
Successful completion of a visual color discrimination test.
Successful completion of annual continuing education units per
state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.
Knowledge of human anatomy to be able to gross (precise
verbal/dictated description, sectioning and sampling) of complex
surgical specimens such as (but not limited to): uterus, ovary,
thyroid, femoral head, gallbladder, skin, soft tissue mass.
Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing,
quality assurance and quality control.
Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and
testing to monitor control checks.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Skill in using computer programs and applications.
Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating
a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with
employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
