Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the lead technician and/or Histology
Supervisor, prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by
a pathologist.
Education:
Associates or Bachelor's degree in Allied Health, Biology, or a
related field.
Must include at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from an
accredited college /university, with a combination of 12 semester
hours of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in
both)
Required Work Experience:
A minimum of 1 year related laboratory experience or healthcare
setting is required. Without a two or four year college degree, a
minimum 2 years' of clinical laboratory work experience is
required.
Promotion to this level may be achieved through the advancement
program for Histo Prep Techs with a combined 1 year of lab
experience that includes at least 6 months JHH laboratory, and
meeting the education requirement. Employee may have no active
discipline.
Ability to work independently, efficiently and prioritize work per
standard operating procedure
Maintains tissue processors following established
procedures.
Embeds and organizes paraffin blocks following established
procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Under supervision and following established standard operation
procedures:
Loading and unloading of tissue processors
Embedding and organizing paraffin blocks,
Microtomy at appropriate thickness,
Staining of routine slides with hematoxylin and eosin (manually and
automated),
Performing slide block match for quality control recognizing
discrepancies and recommending corrective action,
Operation of automatic coverslippers (manual technique as
well),
Use of metric balances, water baths, ovens, computers, printers and
other related equipment according to lab & hospital safety
procedures.
Capable of performing preventative maintenance on microtomes,
automatic stainers, tissue processors, coverslipper and other
equipment as specified. Computer competency with typing of at least
30 WPM.
This is close precision work requiring attention to
detail.
Must have strong verbal, written interpersonal skills.
Must have the ability to read and interpret directions, both oral
and written.
Organize and prioritize own work and follow through on
assignments.
Can work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic
laboratory.
