Registered Veterinarian Tech / Veterinary Tech Specialist Full-Time
Compensation: RVT= $28.00 to $35.00/hr. VTS= $35.00 to $40.00/hr.
Competitive Benefits Package Job Description INTRODUCTION The
purpose of this position is to direct, train, educate, plan,
coordinate and perform a variety of duties concerned with animal
health, staff education, and anesthesia in support of the
Veterinary Neurology and Imaging of the Chesapeake medical program
to ensure quality care for pets and promote greater efficiency by
relieving veterinarians of technical work and administrative
detail. *English is a required language for conducting business.
This position requires a 40-hour Mon-Fri workweek during the peak
hours of business with rotating weekends. MAJOR DUTIES Train
technicians in their performance of a variety of technical and
anesthetic duties that facilitate the work of the practitioners.
Provide leadership and support to the team. Maintain and uphold
hospital policy and protocol. Educate clients and technical team
regarding policies where required. Participate in the development
and maintenance of surgery and anesthetic procedures. Maintain any
and all protocols set forth by the doctors and management team.
Assist in updating SOP's accordingly and communicate updates to the
team. Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal
health laws and regulations including OSHA. Ensure that VNIOC
department and its employees are in compliance with regulations.
Inform the Hospital Manager of any regulatory issues. Responsible
for surgical instruments, materials, and supplies. This includes
maintenance, ordering, training, and inventory. Make
recommendations to the Hospital Manager concerning personnel
matters. Maintain effective employee-management communication.
Refer accounts/invoice issues to the hospital manager for questions
concerning charges. Assist with recruiting, interviewing and hiring
new team members. Direct on-the-job training. Assist with training
technicians and assistants within the hospital to help them gain
the skills and knowledge necessary to meet their professional
goals. Meet regularly with the hospital manager to discuss
improvements and opportunities for ICU, imaging and surgery. Meet
regularly with the hospital manager to discuss improvements and
opportunities for the technician team. Attend and participate in
staff meetings. Assist the hospital manager with monitoring job
performance of team members and performance reviews. Oversee
surgery equipment use and coordinate any repairs needed. Keep
inventory of hospital anesthesia equipment and supplies. Coordinate
yearly maintenance. Coordinate/collaborate with an Imaging doctor
on anesthesia protocols. Other technical duties as required.
CONTROLS OVER WORK Works under the direct supervision of the
technician supervisor and hospital manager, however, may also
receive direction from veterinarians on a daily basis. Will
recognize non-routine or unusual situations and refer them to the
hospital manager with recommended solution(s). Work is reviewed in
terms of the adequacy of services provided. OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS
Skills and Knowledge: Requires knowledge of hospital procedures
outlined in the current employee manual as well as those that are
implied (reasonable expectations). Knowledge of spelling and the
meaning of commonly used veterinary terminology in order to
accurately enter specific information onto patient records.
Requires strong technical skills, proven leadership ability,
customer service skills, and computer skills. Must be a licensed
technician or board eligible (must successfully complete board exam
within a defined time period) PHYSICAL EFFORT The physical demands
described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently
required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk and listen; may be
required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands
to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms. The
employee is often required to lift and carry animals or materials
weighing 50 pounds or more; handle dogs weighing up to 150 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients;
hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances;
exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites,
scratches, and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious
