The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to care for PARC level trauma patients in our Acute Care Emergency Surgery team. Working at the Shock Trauma Center, you become a vital part of a trauma team which cares for patients from admission through discharge. Here, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants have the exceptional treatment of trauma and shock.

General Description: The Nurse Practitioner in the Acute Care Emergency Surgery Service (ACES) functions in the role of hospitalist in collaboration with medical staff. The nurse practitioner or physician assistant is a licensed independent provider who reports directly to the attending physician on service.
The Acute Care Emergency Surgery NP shares the following duties with interns and residents:

  • Admit ACES floor patients (H&P if not done by SAO, admit orders)
  • Coverage and management of floor patients (service and consults)
  • Daily review of labs and address abnormalities
  • Order and review of radiographic studies/procedures
  • Initiate and follow-up on appropriate consults
  • Daily review of medications (including IVF, pain management and home meds)
  • Pre-op floor patients - obtaining necessary clearance, pre-op orders, and posting for the OR (Note - surgical consent is the responsibility of the intern/resident)
  • Discharge planning and dictation of discharge summaries
  • Dictation of interim summary for long term patients
  • Communicate plan of care to patients and families
  • Attend Friday clinic - see patients, present to attending, dictate clinic note
  • Ensure and promote the highest and most ethical standard of careAM rounds/Daily responsibility
    • The NP will meet with the intern(s) each morning to divide the pre-round responsibilities. ( Depending on the census, the NP(s) typically see patients on 5 Weinburg)
    • The NP will round with the team and present patients seen in pre-rounds
    • Multidisciplinary discharge rounds will occur at approximately 10:30 Monday thru Friday and will be attended by an NP (or intern in the absence of an NP)
    • After rounds, it is the responsibility of the interns and NP to check daily labs, replete lytes, follow up on consults/tests, procedures, med review, and facilitate discharges
    • The NP will respond to and resolve any queries from the Triage RN. If an NP is not available, this is the responsibility of the intern. (Note: the Triage line is available for patient concerns, refills of prescriptions, etc)PM rounds
      4:00pm - afternoon list run with team (pertinent day's events, plan of care)
      5:00-6:00 pm - get and/or give sign out...

      What You Need to Be Successful:

      • Applicants will be Masters prepared, ANCC certified Acute/Critical care Nurse Practitioners licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Maryland.
      • A minimum of 2 years of RN (preferable critical care) or CRNP experience in critical care is required.
      • The position offers a full time, rotating shift schedule.
