POSITION SUMMARY:
***WILL CONSIDER Lab Tech I, Lab Tech II or LT - Certified Phlebotomist CANDIDATES***
The Clinical Laboratory Technician II, reports to Supervisor, Lead Laboratory Technician, or Technologist-in-charge. Performs laboratory tests/ waived laboratory tests (which may include but not limited to: Occult and Gastric Blood tests, Urine PH and Urine volume determination). Processing samples which may include accessioning, receiving, aliquoting, and labeling samples; as well as participating in review of laboratory activities. May operate and maintain automated pre-analytical instrumentation (example: Modular Pre Analytic (MPA) or Cobas automated storage and retrieval system). Accurately records and reports results. Maintains established levels of supplies and inventory. Responsible for initiating or verifying that proper actions are taken to resolve problems. Reviews lab requisitions for accuracy and collects pertinent clinical and insurance information. May be responsible for entry of patient and laboratory information into assigned systems. May perform data entry, processing of specimens, both for in-house and referrals; billing functions, and all pre-analytic set ups (may be required to process lab payments). Participates in Quality Assurance initiatives. Provides feedback to leadership regarding laboratory processes and participates in Process Improvement Initiatives. Phlebotomy and Arterial Blood collection may also required. Maintains high level of competency for all skills and knowledge required. Participates in training new employees and in auditing laboratory work flows and performance. Exceptional customer service; communicating with patients, medical providers, and laboratory & hospital staff in clear, concise, and compassionate manner.

11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

COMPETENCIES:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent including high school level course work in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
Completion of accredited laboratory or phlebotomy courses, highly desired.
Work Experience:
Two years (full-time) on-the-job or outside experience as Laboratory Technician, and successful demonstration of the required skills*.
OR
6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with a verified Phlebotomy Certification (completed accredited phlebotomy/medical assistant course and passed exam for ASCP, IAPT, IAPS, or other Department of Pathology recognized certification) may be considered in lieu of 2+ years' experience. With successful demonstration of the required skills* Certification must be kept active/verified if used in lieu of experience in LT2 position.
OR
6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with related Associates or Bachelor's degree in science or healthcare. With successful demonstration of the required skills*.
OR
Clinical Laboratory Science students enrolled in their final year of a 4 year accredited program may work as Clinical Laboratory Tech II/non-certified Phlebotomist and perform moderate complexity testing under the supervision of an experienced Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of laboratory techniques relating to qualitative and quantitative testing procedures and equipment maintenance.
Skills:
Ability to read, write and follow written procedures required in laboratory assignments. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to maintain effective exchange of technical information with diverse groups. Ability to prioritize work to handle both STAT and routine specimens. Ability to demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail, sometimes under stressful conditions. Must perform consistently at a high level, verifying patient demographic data or testing information. Ability to troubleshoot and multitask responsibilities in a high throughput, high-volume testing environment. Must ensure subsequent procedures are performed accurately and safely. Demonstrates exceptional customer service and inter-personal skills; service excellence. Ability to responding to in-person and telephone inquiries. Must contribute to presenting a professional appearance and environment to customers and coworkers.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, see and hear. Must stand for prolonged periods and will be required to walk throughout scheduled shift(s). The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, touch, feel, and type. May reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to work with small instruments/needles, glass tubes and containers, and delicate equipment.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and /or closely examine specimens microscopically.
Clinical laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
Patient environment - those with Phlebotomy assignments will be required to work with patients, following strict procedures for patient safety, identification, and infection control. Work will include bending or stooping over patient bedside or collection station. May occasionally be required to reposition patient. May interact with difficult or combative patients.
Staff in Lab Tech/Phlebotomy positions in many of our labs are required to purchase and wear standardized apparel/uniform scrubs following Department and JHH standardized apparel policies and procedures.
May transport specimens, equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another. May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides.
In some areas work space is confined; therefore, mobility may be difficult.
Staff will be required to complete annual competency review, and must ensure compliance with Hospital Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
