Quality Improvement Team Leader- Pediatrics

Job Description:

Quality Improvement Team Leaders (QITLs) are national leaders in high-reliability, quality improvement methodology and interdisciplinary activities to end preventable harm, to continuously improve patient outcomes and experience, and to eliminate waste in health care. QITLs identify risks and improvement opportunities for patient safety, quality of care, hospital ranking/reputation, and performance-based reimbursement. QITLs manage projects and other initiatives to mitigate risks and improve performance. QITLs oversee, foster, and support the effectiveness of functional unit quality improvement teams. QITLs partner with Chief Quality Officers, Vice Chairs for Quality, Safety and Service, Physician Advisors and quality improvement committees in identifying, planning, executing and reporting on activities related to JHM strategic objectives and other improvement priorities, professional practice evaluation, quality of care concerns, etc. QITLs represent the QI department, assigned functional units and special projects in hospital leadership forums, as requested. QITLs report to the Director of Quality Improvement and duties include other special projects and tasks as assigned.

Day Shift, Full Time 40 hours 8:30 am 5:00 pm

Education:

Masters degree or Masters candidate required in the fields of Nursing, Public Health, Health Policy, Business Administration, Health Administration, Physical Sciences, Technology, or a field related to quality engineering or business process improvement. Completion of an accredited Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathy or Physician's Assistant program preferred. Substantial record of participation in educational programs involving quality improvement tools/methods, leadership, teaching, problem solving, and project management is strongly preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification:

If using clinical degree to meet the positions education requirement, licensed in the State of Maryland as a Registered Nurse (RN), Pharmacist, a Medical Doctor (MD), a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO, or a Physician Assistant (PA). The Johns Hopkins Hospital is committed to the highest professional standards in healthcare quality. All Quality Improvement (QI) Team Leaders must attain National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) professional certification within one year of employment in the Team Leader role, and then maintain the certification.

Work Experience:

Five years of experience applying the skills described above is required. At least three years of this experience (preferably in health care organizations) must involve the application of scientific quality

improvement methods in the workplace, specifically leading or actively participating in quality improvement projects/activities using quality tools to analyze problems (e.g. fish-bone diagrams, cause and effect analysis, flow-charting), and applying six sigma, lean, Toyota production System, or PDSA/PDCA for the overall project; applying quality measurement methods in projects such as sampling, frequency/distributional analysis, reliability analysis, and statistical process control. executing small tests of change, building small tests of change into implementation, spreading changes across the larger organization, and sustaining change over-time; working with front-line staff (people who touch the work process) to analyze problems, test changes, efficiently measure results, and implement changes. Teaching quality improvement methods to participants in teams. Facilitating or staffing groups to execute projects using quality improvement methods; working with senior organizational leaders to commission quality improvement projects, report on results, solve problems, implement organization-wide, and sustain changes. At most two years of experience of the required five years may be in the general skill areas described above, specifically: facilitating or teaching or teaching groups or teams; performing quantitative analysis to support problem solving, decision making, or improvement activities; working with and communicating with organizational leadership to identify and analyze problems, solve problems; using personal leadership skills to solve problems where one does not have formal authority. A minimum of five years clinical experience as staff nurse, M.D., Pharmacist, D.O., or P.A is preferred. Experience in the assigned specialty is preferred.
