Job Description:

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a legal intern to work with the Litigation Team in our Washington, D.C. office. The Litigation Team (which also has branches in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco) is a group of seventeen lawyers and four Litigation Assistants who pursue litigation across a broad range of environmental issues, such as preventing global warming, protecting public health, promoting environmental justice, curbing air and water pollution, preserving wildlife and wild places, and protecting marine mammals. In recent years, the Litigation Team has brought cases to safeguard the people of Flint, Michigan from continued exposure to lead in drinking water; remediate toxic pollution in the Penobscot River; abate mold in New York City public housing for residents with asthma; and protect the residents of Dickson, Tennessee, from TCE in groundwater and their homes.

* The legal intern selected for this position will do legal research and writing to support litigation and policy advocacy, in collaboration with and under the supervision of NRDC lawyers. NRDC s D.C.-based lawyers work on a range of issues.

* Specific assignments depend on those lawyers immediate priorities and needs.

* Candidates should expect to work with several lawyers, who will work together to coordinate assignments and making sure that the intern gets interesting, challenging, and varied work and timely feedback.

* You should be in your second or third year of a J.D. program, or in an advanced legal degree (such as an L.L.M.) program.

* You should have a strong academic record; well-developed writing, research, and interpersonal skills; and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to public service work or environmental and public health issues.

* The ideal candidate would be eligible to receive academic credit in conjunction with the internship, and would be available to work in NRDC s Washington, D.C. office for a minimum of two full business days each week over the course of the fall academic term (beginning in August or September and ending before winter exams).

* Full-time interns are welcome provided that they could be present in the office a majority of the time.

* We will work with interns to help them claim any available academic credit. A small transit reimbursement may be available.

NRDC is committed to workplace diversity and inclusion. We are equal opportunity employers and do not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender identity and expression, marital status, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.
