Post-doctoral Researcher Correlative and In-situ Materials Characterization

Company: Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laborator
Location: Laurel
Posted on: February 15, 2020

Job Description:

Are you passionate about uncovering the mechanisms behind how things work and inventing new materials and analyzing and predicting component failure in extreme environments?

Are you passionate about advancing the latest science as part of a team of outstanding scientists and engineers?

Do you love working on diverse teams to apply your analytical skills to accelerate material development for a variety of applications?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

As a member of our team, you will apply your strong background in engineering, image processing, and data analysis to generate impactful solutions to our country's most important challenges. By joining our team of subject-matter-experts, in SEM/FIB, microCT, and 3D digital image correlation, you will have the opportunity to uncover structure property relationships in additively manufactured metals, determine the performance of coatings for extreme environments, characterize microelectronics, and more. You will innovate in a hands-on, applied laboratory setting by utilizing our modern characterization facility to expedite APL's material development cycle and contribute to laboratory-wide initiatives.

At APL, we strive to foster a collaborative environment with outstanding knowledge and insights that achieve groundbreaking impact. Our APL team values integrity and creative ideas that will ensure our nation's preeminence in the 21st century.

As a Post-doctoral Researcher:

---Your primary responsibility will be to establish and demonstrate a correlative characterization methodology that brings together multiple measurement modalities (i.e., image sets and maps of the local chemistry, structure and functionality) to form rich multimodal and multiscale correlated datasets.

---You will collaborate with materials research project teams and program managers at APL to identify the highest value applications for correlative characterization and author impactful research proposals to secure funding.

---You will develop techniques for monitoring material evolution and degradation through in-situ or 4D measurement frameworks and perform data processing to make performance predictions inherent to correlative material datasets.

---You will automate the collection and digitization of multidimensional data to help achieve a high-throughput materials research cycle (i.e., synthesis, processing, characterization and modeling) and to improve our understanding of established and developmental materials.

---You will network with the materials analysis community to monitor state of the art measurement science techniques, to identify APL opportunities and to make recommendations to advance APL's measurement science capabilities.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

---Possess a PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Physics, or related field.

---Have demonstrated experience in mechanics of materials and in analyzing material structure-property-performance relationships.

---Have demonstrated success guiding new materials research by developing novel measurement techniques over multiple length scales and modalities.

---Have experience demonstrating quantitative x-ray computed tomography and/or digital volume correlation to elucidate material behavior and failure mechanisms in complex materials and hardware.

---Possess proficiency in the use of 3D voxel-based and image analysis software environments such as Volume Graphics (VGStudio), Amira-Avizo, ORS Dragonfly, or other related platforms.

---Have the ability to identify and self-direct new research paths based on results and to propose new ideas.

---Have experience with writing academic research grants, national laboratory proposals, and / or industry research partnerships.

---Are willing and able to perform work in a laboratory setting and travel for field testing, sponsor visits, conference attendance, and presentations.

---Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

---Have experience with advanced manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing or 3D composites.

---Have demonstrated experience in developing material or hardware models based on 3D voxel-based and image analysis data, including digital volume correlation techniques.

---Are proficient in scripting to achieve automation and efficiency in data acquisition and analysis.

---Have knowledge of advanced multi-dimensional statistical data analysis and/or machine learning methods.
