The Department of Pharmacy, consistent with the mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine, places a priority on teaching, research and patient care. At Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) supports inpatient and outpatient clinical research conducted by investigators from the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Johns Hopkins University, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network. The services provided include protocol development consultation, protocol management, inventory management, preparation of investigational products, international study support, medication adherence and compliance counseling, and regulatory compliance auditing. The Johns Hopkins Hospital IDS pharmacists annually provide support for over 500 Institutional Review Board approved clinical trials. The IDS aims to be at the forefront of developing clinical pharmacy service for our research patients and optimizing their care within the confines of the research protocol. This novel specialty residency training program in Investigational Drugs and Research is an organized, directed postgraduate program to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to support clinical drug research. The program is a combined PGY1/PGY2 residency program, following completion of the two-year program the pharmacist will earn a PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 Investigational Drugs and Research residency certificates. The residency is designed to develop expert skills in a variety of settings that provide care for patients enrolled in clinical trials. The experience is designed to develop clinical, analytical, teaching, and leadership skills. Upon completion, the resident will be prepared for a position as a research pharmacist or other opportunities within clinical research. Qualifications for this position include the completion of the PharmD Degree and eligibility for Maryland licensure.
