General summary/purpose: In this HIV-1 laboratory working at the
interface of the nervous and immune systems, the candidate will
utilize their solid foundation in molecular and cellular biology
and basic laboratory techniques. Expertise working with rodents is
preferred. The candidate should be capable of exercising
independent judgment while participating in the planning of
experiments and interpreting results. Works effectively as a
team-member and exhibits excellent interpersonal, communication and
organizational skills. Will provide training to other individuals
assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. May be
assigned an independent project and participate in the creation of
Specific duties & responsibilities:
- Handling and injection of mice with HIV-1.
- Isolation of peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes from
human blood. Perform in vitro infection studies with HIV-1.
- Propagates cell lines, performs transfection of eukaryotic
cells, and transduction of cells with recombinant viral
- Performs general molecular biology techniques such as cloning,
PCR, and Western blotting. Performs specialized histology
techniques such as confocal microscopy and characterize cell
populations using flow cytometry.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
- BS/BA, or equivalent, in the biological sciences or related
- Minimum of one year undergraduate experience in a laboratory
performing relevant techniques.
- Be willing to work under Biohazard Level 2 Safety conditions
- Display willingness to learn and implement new technologies and
work in a self-motivated fashion. Occasional irregular work hours
consistent with rodent research needs may be required.

documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella
vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory
testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are
ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for
those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization
documentation from their own health care providers. Any
vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost
in our Occupational Health office.
