Position Summary:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

I. Estimates materials, supplies and equipment required to perform work assignments.

  1. Determines the means and methods to be used in accomplishing assigned tasks and secures appropriate materials, supplies and equipment from stock and with appropriate approval from suppliers.

  2. Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls, and calibrates all types of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment including pumps, boilers, burners, temperature controls, thermostats, air conditioning and ventilating units, condensers, fans, evaporators, controls, related electrical apparatus and smoke and fire detecting and damping systems.

  3. Diagnoses and troubleshoots problems in heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems by employing test equipment, gauges, meters, and measuring instruments such as rule, level, square, plumb bob, dial indicator, tachometer, thermometer, anemometer, multi-meter, ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, testing lamp, leak detector, velometer, manometer, psychrometer, hydrometer, hygrometer, etc.

  4. Plans and lays out work making standard shop computations utilizing basic arithmetic, shop manuals, catalogs, tables and charts and other standard data sources.

  5. Selects, measures, cuts, bends, fits, assembles, splices, joins, solders, couples, fastens, hangs and installs pipe, tubing, hose, duct work insulation material, wire, etc.

  6. Utilizes hardware supplies and equipment such as hangers, fittings, flanges, connectors, gaskets, couplings, insulation materials, tiles, fasteners, switches sockets, plugs, fuses insulators, gears, bushings, bearings, coils, etc. and applies adhesives, cleaners, solvents, lubricants, sealers, caulking, water proofing material, etc. and refrigerants such as ammonia, brine, carbonic acid, ethyl chloride, Freon, methyl chloride, sulfur dioxide, etc.

  7. Uses hand tools and special equipment and devices such as wire cutters, insulation strippers, crimpers, hammers, chisels, saws, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, shears, pop riveters, files, reamers, taps, dies, soldering iron, torches, wedging tool, tube and pipe cutters, picks, shovels, ladders, scaffolding, block, tackle, hoist, sling, come along, lifts, etc.

  8. Operates power tools and equipment such as electric and pneumatic drills, hammer drills, screwdriver, saws, cutters, sprayers, circulators, vacuum pumps and cleaners, power activated tools, etc.

I0. Cuts passages in ground, floors, ceilings and walls and prepares it for final finishing.

  1. Reads and interprets equipment manuals, written specifications, work orders, written and oral instructions, models and graphic illustrations such as layout diagrams, blueprints, mechanical and architectural drawings, work sketches, schematic drawings, etc.

  2. Inspects equipment to detect leaks and other problems.

  3. Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units using electrician's hand tools.

  4. Maintains and work areas, tools, and equipment operational, clean and orderly.

  5. Observes safety practices and standards and wears protective equipment required or provided.

  6. Directs and trains other employees as assigned.

  7. Performs related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Work requires a high school level of educational development

  2. Maryland Class C driver's license required.

  3. Certification as Journeyman HVAC Mechanic required.

  4. Work requires the analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.

  5. Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, greet visitors, explain Medical Center policies, and/or relay messages to appropriate personnel. This type of interaction requires courtesy and tact when dealing with patients, visitors, and/or Medical Center employees.


1 Four years of HVAC Apprenticeship experience.


Full-time, Day Shift (40 hours)

7:30 am - 4:00 pm

weekend work may be required
