PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
This position reports into the Utility Communication (UComm)
Department in the Digital Grid Organization to provide technical
expertise to support delivery and maintenance of IT solutions
related to Cyber Security, Fiber Optics, Firewall, Real Time
Networks, Smart Grid, Transport (SONET/DWDM) and Wireless (RF)
Communication technologies supporting Exelon. Position will provide
deep technical expertise to support operations and maintenance of
IT solutions related to wireless Smart Grid communications.
Specifically, provide technical leadership supporting the Advanced
Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA)
networks deployed throughout the Exelon Utility companies in
accordance with established strategy, architecture, security, and
process requirements. Act as a primary technical interface with
Utility business customers and wireless technology vendors to
resolve network issues, promote standardization across utilities,
and improve network performance. This role will work in
collaboration with the network team, their leadership, enterprise
business partners, vendors and project/design teams, in all aspects
of the secure & reliable transport of IP networks throughout
Exelon's large & complex enterprise and real time operational
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide technical expertise and operational support for the
wireless Field Area Network technologies deployed for AMI and DA
throughout Exelon Utilities. Skill must include thorough working
knowledge of wireless networking, including routing and associated
protocols which enable the individual to independently perform
Field Area Network support and lead small networking
- Lead and develop junior staff members. Supervise day-to-day
work, provide meaningful coaching, and promote the Exelon values of
a highly diverse and inclusive work environment.
- Assist IT Architecture and Engineering community in planning
the introduction of new technologies and/or identifying the most
appropriate technology choices to accomplish goals based on the
Management Model. Ensure appropriate implementation and
optimization of resources aligned with approved standards and
architecture to meet the Utility Smart Grid application
- Maintain strong working relationships with the Utility business
and our vendor partners to maintain the Field Area Network
- Identify and provide Business and IT metrics on network health.
Actively participate in process improvement activities to increase
standardization across utilities and improve operational
- Maintain technical knowledge and business acumen within own
discipline or function
- Provide performance evaluations, career development feedback,
and recognition as required.
This position will serve as the technical lead engineer within
the Mid-Atlantic Exelon Utilities. Maintains deep technical
knowledge and broad understanding of utility telecommunications
devices tie together to form a cohesive communications architecture
including related networking technologies across Exelon.
Promotes knowledge via seminars, presentations and publications
within IT and Exelon
Participates in technological innovation to drive new business
opportunities and solve complex business problems.
Supports Exelon policy, standards and governance while designing
solutions or solving issues.
Works under minimal supervision.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline and
typically 5 to 8 years' experience in various network routing and
switching communication technologies, or equivalent combination of
education and work experience.
- Experience working in a substation environment including
detailed understanding of specific requirements and standards for
SCADA and system protection communications.
- Working knowledge of IP networking and cyber security
- Thorough understanding of OSI layers 1, 2 and 3 with emphasis
on layer 3 routing and addressing structure including BGP and ISIS
- Experience in network management platforms and underlying
- Understanding of ITIL processes for IT service management
- Excellent business communication skills - Able to effectively
communicate highly technical information in non-technical
terminology (written and verbal).
- Strong organizational, time management, and supervisory
- Technical certification in network technologies (CompTIA A /
Network , Cisco CCNA, etc.)
- Wireless mesh and cellular network experience
- Experience working with SCADA protocols (DNP3) and multi-tier
- Experience working in an electric or gas utility
