Job Description:

Job Summary
Provides basic patient medical care during interfacility ambulance transport and/or in the Emergency Department. Performs medical procedures under the supervision of physician or nursing staff or established protocol.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent. Successful completion of the Department of Transportation (DOT) module EMT course.
1 year of EMT experience.
Current National Registry EMT and Maryland EMT certification. Current unrestricted Class C Drivers License. No current points assigned to drivers license and must maintain a good driving record (no points). Current BLS certification. District of Columbia EMT certification required within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication. Basic computer skills preferred.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • As part of the programs safety management system, provides feedback and participates in program safety initiatives.
  • Assists Emergency Department patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as feeding, dressing, bathing, ambulating, etc. while in the Emergency Department area(s).
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Ensures cleanliness and appropriate par levels of supplies in transport vehicle(s).
  • Establishes and maintains professional radio communications with MedSTAR and other agencies, adhering to appropriate FCC protocols.
  • Initiates department standing orders in appropriate patients. Performs basic airway techniques including oxygen therapy. May perform bag-mask ventilation according to established departmental protocols in emergency situations.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients and families. Provides basic patient comfort measures during procedures. When necessary, provides environmental support to expedite timely patient admission or transfer. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve the environment of care.
  • Participates in MedSTAR Transport safety program.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Transports patients to various locations as assigned. Loads and unloads patients, medical equipment, and passengers from MedStar transportation vehicles. May assist in the unloading and transportation of MedSTAR patients from other transportation vehicles, through MedSTAR, and to assigned rooms as required.
