Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is currently accepting Firefighter / Rescuer I (Recruit) applications for Recruit Class 51, tentatively scheduled to begin September 12, 2022.

Recruit Class 51 class is an abbreviated, 12-week recruit class only for individuals who currently have or will have the following by December 31, 2021:

EMT or Paramedic (Maryland or National Registry)
Firefighter I
Firefighter II
Hazardous Materials Operations

All certifications must be MFRI, ProBoard or IFSAC.

Credentials from agencies other than those listed above will be considered on a case-by-case basis; however, approval is not guaranteed. If you are eligible for ProBoard or IFSAC but have not yet applied, we strongly recommend that you begin that process now.

The Montgomery County (MD) Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), an Accredited Agency, is a full-spectrum life safety agency protecting about 500 square miles and over 1 million people living and working in Maryland's most populous jurisdiction. The MCFRS annually handles over 100,000 emergency calls for service and is staffed by nearly 1300 career uniformed men and women, professional civilian staff, and volunteers.

Our mission is to protect lives, property, and the environment with comprehensive risk reduction programs and safe and effective emergency response. Our hiring needs vary from year to year; however, our goal is to recruit highly qualified and diverse candidates to join our organization. MCFRS delivers services to our customers with impartiality and excellence, promotes the highest standards of safety and welfare, and serves with integrity and mutual respect. Montgomery County Firefighter/Rescuers perform manual and technical work in fire suppression prevention, rescue, communications, and emergency medical services primarily on a rotating 24-on/48-off shift work basis, which may require the highest level of sustained exertion and agility.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements as described below will be invited to take a written exam. Applicants will be notified of the scheduled exam dates and times via email. Throughout the entirety of the hiring process, a majority of correspondence will be by email. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide a valid email address at the time of application that will remain valid throughout the hiring process. Applicants will be notified whether they passed or failed the exam.

Before receiving a final offer of employment, selected applicants will be evaluated and must successfully complete all of the following:

1. Written entry exam
2. Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) - CPAT certificates from other jurisdictions will not be accepted
3. Background investigation
4. Medical examination (including a drug/alcohol screen) & SCBA Fit Test
5. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination

Applicants selected for hire will be required to sign an agreement stating they are tobacco-free both on and off duty. Failure to remain tobacco-free throughout employment with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service may result in termination.

Education: High School graduate or equivalent acceptable to the State of Maryland. Applicants who do not submit their high school diploma or equivalent by December 31, 2021, will not continue in the hiring process.

Citizenship and Age: Individuals appointed to a position in this class must be at least eighteen (18) years of age by December 31, 2021. Individuals hired to a position in this job class must be a citizen of the US or a Resident Alien.

License: Possession of a valid, non-provisional / non-learners drivers license from applicants state of residence.

Medical Exam Protocol: Candidates must successfully pass the physical examination in accordance with established National Fire Protection Association standards. Candidates must successfully pass the fit testing requirement with protective masks and other respiratory protective devices. Candidates must pass a drug and alcohol screening test.
