The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is the number one school of public health in the U.S. and the oldest and largest, public health school in the world.

Through education, research, and practice, the Bloomberg American Health Initiative works to tackle critical, 21st-century challenges to public health in the United States, aiming to improve health and save lives nationwide. It has five focus areas: addiction and overdose; environmental challenges; obesity and the food system; risks to adolescent health; and violence.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative is seeking a Communications Associate to promote the Initiative's research, practice, and educational portfolios through written and oral communication and visual content across a wide variety of platforms including local, regional, and national print and electronic media outlets, digital platforms, and social media. The Communications Associate will work proactively with faculty, students, and staff on developing, writing, editing, and designing content. The Communications Associate will report to the Director of Communications.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative and compelling content for multimedia materials (video, photography, tweets, text, blogs, podcasts) that support the goals and objectives of the Initiative.
  • Write, design, edit and produce reports, press releases, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures, and other documents for the department and research centers.
  • Support the writing and development of talking points, newsletters, presentations, and other marketing materials.
  • Support the promotion and dissemination of publications and other Initiative resources, including developing and monitoring production schedules.
  • Use social media to drive users to the Initiative's website, promote faculty, research, academic programs, events, and other content.
  • Report monthly social media analytics and recommendations on how to improve the reach and effectiveness of communications on those channels.
  • Develop content for weekly newsletter.
  • Maintain a website to ensure accuracy of the research, education, and practice content.
  • Maintain email lists and databases of key stakeholder audiences.
  • Provide communications support and technical assistance for faculty.
  • Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with the University Branding Guidelines of JHU Use of Name Guidelines.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
    • Four years related experience.
    • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

      Preferred Qualifications
      • Strong interest in strategic communications and public health.
      • Holistic understanding of all aspects of public health communications, positioning and messaging, including both traditional and emerging media platforms.
      • Strong interpersonal skills.
      • Interest in public health and public health policy.
      • Excellent technical communications skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate to a range of audiences.
      • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
      • Ability to understand and synthesize and distill large amounts of information, and generate key messages.
      • Ability to appropriately communicate with external partners.
      • Experience with social media and website content generation and management.
      • Experience leading/managing projects and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
      • Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines.
      • Excellent work attitude and habits including strong interpersonal skills, reliability, flexibility, self-motivated and the ability to think and work independently and as a team.
      • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and critically in problem-solving and project implementation.
      • Research opportunities for new social marketing platforms.
      • Project management experience.

        Special Skills & Knowledge
        • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
          • Experience using web content management systems.
          • Experience using, translating, and applying Google Analytics.
            • Experience with design software/programs (i.e. Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie).

              30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
