Maritime Systems Engineer-14252 Position Description The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC., is seeking a Maritime Systems Engineer. Job Summary: Apply systems engineering, systems integration, acquisition management, and technology evaluation expertise in a trusted agent role for Navy submarine, mine warfare, and unmanned platforms programs. Provide subsystem technology evaluations, broad systems engineering evaluation, requirements development and validation, and hardware and software integration and testing in support of existing programs for DoD customers. Duties:

  • Apply maritime domain expertise to the detailed evaluation and development of unmanned vehicle, acoustic systems integration, communications and control, autonomy and on-board processing, power distribution, mechanical integrity, launch and recovery support, and integration of COTS sensors into systems. (40%)
  • Apply systems engineering expertise to work with DoD stakeholders and vendors in developing, documenting, implementing, testing, and maintaining systems for Science and Technology (S&T) demonstration and rapid-prototype efforts as well as for acquisition programs of record. Apply systems engineering knowledge and skills to develop specifications, use cases, system architecture, and trade studies. Support engineering tasks including white paper development, technology surveys, and drafting of technical findings and recommendations. Author and review technical analyses, designs, and systems engineering artifacts for engineering and programmatic milestones and technical reviews. (40%)
  • Work with multiple DoD system stakeholders to evaluate risks and opportunities and to develop and implement test/evaluation strategies to mitigate negative impacts on their programs and missions (10%)
  • Work with program and functional managers to expand technical challenges and explore new areas to which the group could contribute. Support sponsor engagement and concept development. Assist or lead activities to expand existing work or acquire new work which may include proposal writing and meetings with the potential sponsors. (5%)
  • Support sponsor meetings at the Washington Navy Yard and/or Pentagon. Qualifications: Required Qualifications: BS in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or other related technical discipline. Minimum 7 years of experience in undersea systems or a field applicable to this position. Experience with system engineering methods and tools for system development, integration, evaluation, and technology analysis. Ability to lead or work as a member of team with minimum supervision. Proven ability to participate in engineering teams. Excellent written, verbal, and briefing skills. Desired Qualifications: MS in systems engineering or equivalent discipline. Demonstrated ability as a project manager. Ability to work within the government infrastructure and take on leadership roles in a diverse environment of contractors, government, and user staff. Special Working Conditions: Some travel required to include meetings (typically Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.
